The CO of TS Penelope (Blackpool Unit) has kindly given us permission to share the wonderful recruiting article that he had placed in the Balckpool Gazetee.

CO's may wish to approach their own local newspapers with a view to securing a similar article for their Units.

The competition is open to anyone aged 16 – 25; two first prize winners will get an award, a berth (worth up to £800) for a voyage on the Lord Nelson and one year’s membership to the Nelson Society.   10 runners up will also receive one year’s membership to the Nelson society and book prize.

To enter you must submit an essay, creative writing piece, artwork, video, or computer generated image relating to the life achievements of Admiral Lord Nelson.  You must remember to clearly mark entries with your name and Unit.

Entries must be the original work of the individual and must be submitted by March 23 to Jeanette Ryder, email jeanetteyardley4@yahoo.co.uk or mail to Jeanette Ryder, Rydal, 4 Yardley Road, Hedge End, Southampton SO30 0HQ.  Entrants must also be able to meet the JST sailing criteria for crewing on the tall ship.

New Year Honours 2012

Many congratulations to DO Cumbria, Lt Cdr (SCC) Phil Burns MBE RNR, for the award of an MBE in the recent New Year Honours list. This was the result of his services to the Defence Industry over many years and also took account of his work and service with the Sea Cadet Corps.

This is a great personal achievement and thoroughly well deserved and on behalf of all in NW Area we offer our sincere congratulations.

Recruitment Trailer and Marquee

Please direct all bookings for the recruitment trailer and/or the marquee to gfleet@ms-sc.org .

The appropriate sign out sheet must be filled out by the hiring Unit on collection of either the recruitment trailer or the marquee.

Any damage to the marquee or trailer will be paid for by the previous hiring unit.  This said, please make sure you check the marquee during assembly/disassembly and the recruitment trailer upon pick up/drop off and report any damage you find to the above email address as soon as possible.

Please also return the trailer in a clean and tidy condition (this includes wiping up any coffee spills, removing grass from the carpet and cleaning up any mud), failure to do so will result in the offending unit returning to Area Office to clean the trailer.  Repeat offenders will lose their right to hire out the trailer in the future.

North West Area Boating

You will be aware that Hollingworth Lake Boating Station closed on 30 April 2011. This was a difficult decision taken by Trustees as part of the strategic review of boating across the MSSC. Many Units and individuals have benefitted from this facility and tribute should be paid to all those involved in the management and instruction over many years.

Area Boating will now switch to Crosby Lakeside Adventure Centre (
http://www.crosbylakeside.co.uk/) and arrangements are fully underway to move equipment and put measures in place to operate from there as soon as possible. It is intended to honour all bookings made for Hollingworth Lake and run these from Crosby. The first major event will be the Area Regatta in July.

I recognise that there have been a number of questions raised in many quarters about procedures and especially costs. As you will appreciate there are certain aspects on operating from Crosby that have to be finalised and until that is done it would be premature to give firm details. Suffice to say that Crosby is a superb, fully accredited RYA facility, which hosts many youth groups very successfully and has appropriate measures in place to do so. We will be working alongside the staff at Crosby to ensure the experience for our Cadets is first class.

To ensure our requirements are met we will be appointing a new Operations Manager who will work as part of the NW Area Office staff. We are also working on finalising a budget but it is planned that Units will not pay any more than was the case at Hollingworth Lake.

A significant factor in deciding to move operations to Crosby is the potential it affords for possible expansion in the future. There is firm intent to develop plans for a SC Boating Centre on the site thus allowing a degree of independence, especially in terms of accommodation, whilst still benefitting from the existing facilities.

Further details on specifics will be forthcoming following the appointment of the Operations Manager.
