Powerboats in the Sea Cadets have many roles. For some their primary purpose is to provide safety for other afloat activities. The Sea Cadet powerboat fleet is divided into two categories, displacement and planing. In order to operate this fleet of powerboats it is essential to provide training. This training is certificated by the Royal Yachting Association and is accessible by cadets and adult volunteers alike. Many Sea Cadet units operate powered craft which provide great opportunities to practice and develop boat handling and skippering skills learnt on training courses, delivered at Royal Yachting Association (RYA) training centres
Competitions – There are two competitions open to cadets using powerboats. One is our own National Combined Regatta Powerboat Handling Competition and the other is the Royal Yachting Association Youth RIB Championships.
Powerboat Handling Competition – This is a competition about boat handling skills. It will test the ability of the coxswain and the crew in various evolutions which are judged. Entry into the competition is usually by winning the District and then Area events.
Royal Yachting Association Youth RIB Championships – This is an external competition run by the RYA. Entry is through competing at the regional competitions and winners are then entered into the National competition held annually at the Southampton Boat Show in September. The prize for winning is a 4.8m RIB from Ribcraft for the competitors unit.
