Integration of Piping, Meteorology, and Navigation into CTP
As part of our ongoing effort to refine and enhance our offerings, we have made the decision to integrate Piping, Meteorology, and Navigation into our Cadet Training Programme (CTP). These three areas represent key skills that all Sea Cadets should master to excel in their cadet journey. Integrating these into the CTP will allow more cadets than ever to gain skills and knowledge in these areas.
We will release new modules in phases, with training spotlights, session plans, and resources to support the rollout. This approach will allow unit teams to spend time understanding each set of modules before being introduced to new elements.
Piping is fundamental to many aspects of unit life, and we are updating the CTP syllabus to reflect its importance.
- The in-unit calls from the Basic course will now be included in the New Entry - Ordinary Cadet syllabi.
- Training for these calls will be incorporated into the Core Drill syllabus for new volunteers, ensuring consistency across the board. Higher-level piping calls will be part of the Able and Leading Cadet syllabi. Similar to peer educator or first aid training, these sessions will require a qualified Piping instructor to deliver.
The first modules released will be the Piping New Entry – Ordinary Cadet Syllabus in October 2024, with others being added in 2025.
Volunteers who hold a piping instructor qualification will retain their certifications, and additional instructor training will continue to be offered again as one-day courses from now so we can maintain the expertise of piping within the Sea Cadet Corps.
Cadet Piping Instructors will retain their roles and new Cadet Piping Instructors will be able to be appointed in-unit through the process laid out in the syllabus below.
Navigation and water safety are critical components of the Sea Cadets' training, and we are dedicated to ensuring that all cadets acquire these essential skills.
Of particular importance are the Rules of the Road safety points, which all cadets should know before participating in boating activities. Additionally, we will be introducing discussions on the latest technological navigation aids.
Delivery of these modules will be through facilitative sessions and supported by video and e-learning content allowing delivery by unit instructors.
For higher-level skills, cadets will now have the opportunity to link their training to the Offshore Fleet, where they can practice planning voyages for their vessels, taking into account weather and tidal conditions.
These modules will be released in rank order throughout 2025
Meteorology has been a core part of the CTP for some time. In January 2024, we split the core learning to provide clear progression through the Basic syllabus.
This structure will remain in place, with updates to the Inshore, and Offshore syllabi reflecting the higher-level meteorological skills our senior cadets will need to be added in 2025 as part of the next syllabus review.
We extend our sincere thanks to all the volunteers, Area Staff Officers (ASOs), and National Staff Officers (NSOs) who have supported us in developing this content. Your continued dedication ensures that this crucial learning is preserved and delivered effectively.
